Hidden Dangers of Cleaning Products
Educating yourself about the products in your home will only lead to a higher chance for good health. Unfortuneatly sislabled products are a great way for advertising companies to propogate misinformation to the consumer in attempts to sell more products. Things such as "natural" are vague terms that really mean nothing. Instead you should look for things that are definite such as "no phosphates", "no petroleum" or the like. The term "organic" is a term ONLY reserved by the FDA for food products and DOES NOT apply to personal products or cleaning products - so always look closely at the ingredients.
Cleaning ingredients vary in the type of health hazard they pose. Some cause acute, or immediate, hazards such as skin or respiratory irritation, watery eyes, or chemical burns, while others are associated with chronic, or long-term, effects such as cancer.
WHAT IF I CAN'T FIND INFORMATION ON MY PRODUCT? You are just a part of the sad state of affairs that exists. According to the National Research Council, "no toxic information is available for more than 80% of the chemicals in everyday-use products! Less than 20% have been tested for acute effects and less than 10% have been tested for chronic, reproductive or mutagenic effects," !! Most have not been tested for combined or accumulated effects, nor for their effects on unborn children.Certain products and labeling should raise a red-flag and be of serious concern for everyone they include the following:

What Do Mom's Think About Cleaning Products?
A Harris Interactive poll called 1,108 moms across the U.S. with children under the age of 18 living at home - regarding cleaning products used in the home. The results?
- 95% of moms agreed that household cleaning products can be made of toxic ingredients
- 61% agreed that the fumes from cleaning products bothered them
- 81% of the respondents agreed that household cleaning products may trigger asthma in children and adults
- Despite this, 70% claimed they thought home cleaning products are safe to use around their own family anyway
- Only 49% said they were worried that their own children may be exposed to household toxins when products are used as directed
- Only 38% agreed with the EPA's scientifically supported claim that indoor air tends to be more toxic than outdoor air
- Overall, an astounding 94% of moms said they would stop using their favorite cleaning product if they found out it may be harmful to their families' health.

- Frequently Answered Questions
-
Q: How will our relationship work?
A: Since we know we must earn your continued patronage on each visit, we don't use contracts. We depend on open communication and your candid evaluation of our service. If you are happy, tell a friend. Also, let us know of ways we can serve you better.
Q: Do I have to do anything before the cleaning?
A: In order to give you the greatest value, we ask you to take a few minutes the night before to pick up extraneous clothing, toys, and other household items.
Q: What will Zen Maids do in my home?
A: Our free in-home estimate allows us to better understand your cleaning needs and expectations. Our service includes cleaning baseboards, pictures, lampshades, knick-knacks, window-sills, furniture, and basic light fixtures, and vacuuming throughout. Cupboard fronts are spot-cleaned, floors are washed, and the kitchen and bathrooms are cleaned. Visit the Services Page for a more in-depth list. We can easily customize a cleaning program to fit your home’s unique needs.
Q: At what time will the cleaning team be at my home?
A: Our normal work days are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. While in most cases it is not possible to give a specific time to be at your home, but we can give you a 2-hour arrival window.
Q: What if something is damaged when my home is cleaned?
A: We treat your home with the greatest care; however, should damage or breakage occur while we are cleaning your home, we will make every effort to have the item repaired, or replaced if it cannot be repaired. Insurance claims will be filed when appropriate.
Q: Am I potentially liable for worker's compensation insurance or taxes?
A: Many homeowners are not aware of their potential personal liability for work-related injury and social security taxes for independent home-service workers. Don't worry. Zen Maids takes care of this for you by never hiring independent contractors. We only use OUR employees, which makes them OUR responsibility – not yours.
Q: Do I need to provide any supplies or equipment?
A: For your convenience, cleaning equipment (ORECK vacuum, broom, ORECK canister vacuum, and clean towels and cleaning supplies) are provided by Zen Maids. We would be pleased to accommodate you should you wish us to use your own preferred equipment.
Q: Do I have to be home when the team comes?
A: Most of our customers are not. Ideally you can arrange for the concierge at your building to release a key to us each time; or you can provide us with a key. For added security, keys are coded individually and cross-referenced separately. If you choose not to provide a key and we are unable to access your home for a scheduled cleaning, you may incur a $30 lock – out charge.
Q: What if my cleaning falls on a holiday?
A: If your scheduled cleaning falls on the observance of a major holiday, we will contact you to reschedule your service. Also, as a courtesy we make sure that we always call or email you the day before to remind you of your appointment.
Q: What if I need to change the scheduled cleaning?
A: Just give us a call 24 hours in advance!!
Q: Are you insured and bonded ?
A: Yes. Zen Maids is insured and bonded.
Q: How can I know if you serve our neighborhood?
A: We serve only Downtown San Diego and Coronado but can easily refer you to a house cleaner in a different area.
Q: What will it cost to clean our home?
A: Zen Maids is not a cookie cutter cleaning service, and one reason for our growing membership is our approach to pricing. We believe no two homes are exactly alike and so your cleaning needs are customized to suit your family's needs and budget.
Q: Can I purchase your service for someone else?
A: Yes. Zen Maids has a gift certificate program which allows you to give the gift of a clean fresh home to a friend or loved one. Our gift certificates are great ideas for weddings, birthdays, new moms & dads or just a very original way to say "I'm thinking of you." With the Zen Maids experience, no detail is too small. We can even arrange to have that 'hard to get video' waiting for you in your DVD!
Q: With the wide list of services you provide you give with each cleaning how can your prices be so competitive?
A: Simple. Zen Maids is not merely interested in getting you as a customer once, we build lasting relationships with our clients. Over time our loyal clients have helped us to grow, and we show our appreciation for that relationship. - Login
